  • 2003 150 2 stroke won't start, buzzing noise..

I searched the forums and no luck so have to post this.
Was starting my engine and did the usual, pump the fuel bulb, started up. went to restart and nothing. took off the cowling and when I turned the key or tried to engage the trim i got nothing but a buzzing noise coming from somewhere below the stater. Not a mechanic but a diy-er. here is a pic as to where I'm hearing the buzzing noise... no idea why my attachment is sideways,,,,
    Thanks.

Is your battery healthy? Shouldn't drop bellow 9v when cranking.
Check your cables for voltage drop - shouldn't exceed 0.4v each cable.
Check for Power at the brown bullet connector at the relay (when cranking) should be around 12v.
Check for continuity between the brown bullet connector and earth (disconnected)
When cranking, check voltage difference between the input (battery side) of the relay and the output (starter side) of the relay - should be no more than 0.1-0.2v at worse.

Shit that could be the problem, if you find an electric fuel pump kill it with fire. Of course in a safe manner.

Last time I checked these engines didn't have an electric fuel pump

          Agreed with the battery.

Also check ALL your main large connections to the engine and battery. If you have a "Perko" type on/off switch, check the contacts and tightness in there as well.

Between the T&T not working and the engine not cranking, the common denominator is the battery/cables (engine NOT getting full voltage). If all those pan out, put a volt meter on the battery and check voltage, should be approx 12.8. Then turn the key to crank (or the trim as well) while monitoring the volt meter. If the voltage drops significantly, the battery is toast.

You can charge it fully, then get it load tested (any automotive parts store will check it for free) to verify.

If it has an electric fuel pump, it usually runs for a couple of seconds until the fuel rail is pressurized then turns off. That electric pump is located inside the VST, (pictured below)

Depending on the model (which we don't know). That engine came with carbs or with fuel injection(with fuel pump).

                found it

After trying this and that, turns out its a bad cable. relays, solenoid, starter all fine. Thanks for all your help!

Yeah mate, I'm not stupid if you look at the supplied photo you clearly see carburetors.

That's great, probably the cheapest bit also!

No one called you stupid. I didn't see the carbs. The issue didn't have anything to do with the fuel system as I initially posted (fuel pump or otherwise).

You also mentioned you didn't know they had electric fuel pumps in post #4 :

"Last time I checked these engines didn't have an electric fuel pump"

Sorry I tried to bring something to your attention, won't happen again..

I could not even open the attachment to see the photo.
usually if there is no model number I don't post much.

i read this post early in the am. thought it was a four stroke when I mentioned electric fuel pump. did not mean to stir a hornets nest.

                            no hornets nest stirred.
just to many eager folks that wish to help that don't realize there must have been at least 10 models of a US imported 150 HP outboards in the past 20+ years.

I am behind a monitor, I cant see what the poster sees.

so that's why usually without a model number I wont reply.

Sorry for being a little harsh.
Pictured is a carburetor v6 two stroke (can see three relays and two diaphragm pumps & three carbys.
Relays will buzz when there is insufficient voltage.
Thanks rodbolt for the advice, I will avoid posting when there is little information.
