How to adjust the gear linkage?

Is there a trick to lining up the gear linkage when the foot is put back on? The linkage will line up to put the pin in it, but it is not in the right gear. The cable seems to long, not enought threads to adjust it. I think I remember there being a trick to getting it lined up right. Thanks

i always put the gearbox in neutral prior to installing it,unhook cable at motor and set in neutral and you can adjust the cables at either end.

I tried to adjust the cable, but even on it's shortest setting it is to long. Even when everything is in neutral it still is way off.

You may have to remove lower unit and check to see if lower unit and shifter on engine are in same gear.
