Binnacle slack Question

Yamaha F150.. When I engage forward motion my throttle lever will hit first stop (completely engaged in gear ) and it idles at about 650 no problem so far. Then when I push the throttle lever forward to increase the speed, the lever travels about 2 inches before it first begins to increase speed . Not a big inconvenience however is this normal operation or should I take up the slack? Is this done at the engine connection ? thanks
