'stopper' on flywheel - 15hp 4-stroke - what's it do?

The stopper on my Yamaha 15HP 4-stroke is broken. To get the flywheel to spin when I pull the starter rope, I had to manually hold it away from the flywheel and for now I've removed this part. What is its function????

Engine - F15MSHA (2001)
part number in question - 66T-15794-00-00

The stopper, lock the starter rope when the gear is not in neutral.
Not expensive, buy a new one [img]smile.gif[/img]
