I have a pair of '87 115's. Very high hours but have perfect compression and run great. I have never run ring free in my engines. I was told by several yami mechanics that ringfree is essential in yamis... Should I start using it or do you think the shock of breaking up the carbon might do more harm than good...thanks

fliboi,
Never too late to start using a detergent in the fuel of a 2-stroke - since they burn a lot of oil, there's a lot of carbon buildup on the pistons, rings, and ports.
You can use RingFree or SeaFoam - I prefer SeaFoam. Both will do the same job. I use SeaFoam about every third tank - one ounce to one gallon.
Some outboard owners prefer to use a detergent all the time - just a matter of personal preference.
By the way - Yamaha's RingFree is nothing more than Chevron Techron in disguise - I've seen it in bottles at Wal-Mart.
Good luck ,
