Dropped the lower unit today , pile of junk sitting on top of water pump , ( what was left of drive shaft bushing ) ordered new bushing , started to clean area up , lots of corrosion, is this bushing a necessity? I will wait till new one arrives , dry fit , to see how bad the corrosion is . I guess I could Jb weld the area and file / sand , any and all suggestion appreciated , thanks Eric

Yamaha put it on there for a reason.
It apparently hadn't been lubed regularly. I believe there should be a retainer clip up in the housing to retain the bushing.
JB Weld should work fine if the bushing is sloppy once installed.
Double check on that retainer clip (if you don't have it).
BTW, once that bushing is in, use Genuine Yamaha Waterproof marine grease (or similar) as regular wheel hearing grease will NOT hold up and squeak in a couple of hours-(Been there, done that)Scott

You are correct , I fished hard , and neglected it , 100% my fault , I pulled the clip , pulled what was left out , wire brushed everything , the corrosion is my concern , I will most certainly use the correct grease , thanks

you'll never miss it.
Maybe a coat of good aluminum-bonding paint (such as zinc chromate)
just to slow corrosion eating completely through the housing.
