  • F90 Diagnostic Help

This is what happened the last two times in two weeks I had my boat out.
Sunday, 25 May 2014. Made a 25 mile run with no problems. When I made the return trip my engine shut off when I dropped into neutral at the boat ramp. I tried three or four times to start it and it would fire and cut off immediately. I finally started it in fast idle and quickly shifted into gear so I could load the boat. I changed the fuel/water separator, and internal fuel filter and everything appeared to be operational. Last Sunday, 1 June 2014, I made a 15 mile run, fished with the motor running for about three hours and came back in. The motor again died at idle and repeated the wouldn't run except at fast idle. On the way across the bay about two miles from the ramp the motor dropped from 5000RPM to 2800RPM and stayed there until I got to the ramp and had the idle problem. I suspect the VST filter is plugging up with debris when running in rough water and it unclogs when the boat sits for a while. I took it to the Yamaha dealer yesterday and described the problems and symptoms. He suspects water in the fuel, but hasn't called yet with a diagnosis. I try to maintain my equipment in good order and don't abuse it or neglect routing maintenance. Since 2006 I estimate I have spent between $5000 and $6000 on just about every kind of problem you can think of. I've just about rebuilt the motor piece by piece. I previously owned an 85 Force that everyone told me was a piece of junk. I had one $90 repair other than routine maintenance in 11 years. When I bought the Yammy I thought I had hit the big time. Lets see if I can remember the stuff I've had done: A voltage regulator, three ignition switches, new fuel lines and VST filter, replaced manual steering with hydraulic, replaced entire wiring harness,
rebuilt entire lower unit, replaced tilt and trim relay, had tilt and trim rebuilt (needs it again). That's the major stuff. Did I get a lemon? Please don't comment that I must not be taking proper care of it cause that just ain't so.
Anyone want to venture a guess as to what the current problem is. I should know today.
