  • 2004 90HP intermittent starting problem

I'm having intermittent problems with 90hp yamaha and looking for any suggestions. When cold, it starts every time, but if I turn off the engine while on the lake, there is a good chance it will not crank using the key. Sometimes trimming the motor up/down a little will make it start??? But when that doesn't work, I have to use the rope to start it. Runs fine.

The dealer has not been able to duplicate the trouble in the shop.

my guess is your starter is not engauging when you say it will not start/crank.

If tilting helps sometime then it could be a bad connection that moves with cable and makes connection
Will have to test things when it happens to locate what is getting voltage and what is not

Check your battery connections (pull them off, inspect, clean, tighten).

If you have a battery switch (Perko type), check that too. Its not unusual for the connections to get crappy in the switch (or loosen as well)..

As noted above, start testing: Bring a 12 volt test light so when its acting up, you can follow the 12+ volts starting at the battery until you loose 12 volts. That will be your issue..
