70TLRR Not firing. Help!

Who wants to help out a young west coast lady trying to learn her outboard?

I have a 1993 70TLRR 2 stroke, was running great until it was borrowed. She cranks, but won't spark. I've tried disconnecting the kill switch, and have tried replacing the CDI with a new one to no avail. I haven't figured out where to look other than the stator, which I am guessing at the charge coil being the issue.
I'm terrible with understanding how to use an Ohm meter to test the coils, and am learning this system as I go.

I live on a small island so parts like a compression gauge and spark tester aren't readily available...

Welcome to the forum K!

If you can get a helper, pull a spark out, plug it back into its cap and ground it to the block. Have your helper hit the key to crank the engine over and watch for spark. Should be very visable. Please report back after that..

And, does it crank over (spin) at its normal speed when trying to start (checking battery status)?


BTW, when whoever borrowed it, did they happen to mention right before it died, any symptoms?

Need to get a DVA adapter and hook to a voltmeter to test voltages into and out of CDI to see what is going on

We tested and there were no sparks whatsoever in any of the 3. The plugs looked fine.

It does crank over, and the battery has a charge still even though it was sitting connected for a good while. Although I'm not sure if it's cranking at the right speed. It sounds like it should go though.

Would testing the CDI voltages tell me if there's a problem in the charge coil?

I'm assuming you put the black, plastic, ignition switch safety clip back in the igniion switch correct?

correct we disconnected the kill switch and tried it connected with the safety in
