• Hard Starting 50 HP 2 stroke

It must be something I am or am not doing. Brand new 50hp 2 stroke with 703x side control. Pump up primer ball. Dealer told be choke was on the key. Press in key and crank ...... and crank ...... and crank. Finally starts. Something's not right.

Old one 703X had choke on toggle switch so you could crank & choke with the same hand. Don't know why they ever changed it. Old engine's a 1994 sure starts better than the new one.

Aceman,
Something is not right with your motor - I believe your motor has the "prime start" type of choke. Something is amiss there.
You're still under warranty - dealer should fix this for you - go see him.
Good luck ,

I know this will sound strange, it did to me, but I had the same type issue with my 2000 Yamaha 50 2 stroke.
I got, this boat, last summer and it was always very hard to start. It now starts very easily, hot or in the dead of winter, and all I did was stop pushing in on the key.
Before that I had changed the plugs, cleaned the carbs and the entire fuel system without success. Heck I was about to take it to a dealer and let them investigate why it was so hard to start.
I have no idea why it worked, but it did. I even went back and tried doing the push the key in start procedure and the problem returned.
I have not investigated what goes on when I push in on my key, (read lazy) I'm just happy a guy I was fishing with told me to try starting without doing so. It now starts like it should, every time. ( Man I hope I didn't just jinx myself)
Maybe Ken, or some other Yamaha guru, can explain this one, as it is totally baffling to me.
Any way good luck with your new Yamaha. I love mine.

Aceman,
You might try what "hkps1" is doing with his
50 Yamaha - that "prime start" may not need you to push the start switch in - that may be overriding the "auto" feature, if it has one.
Your owner's manual, I would think, should have something in there about best way to start - take a look to see if it mentions anything about the prime start system.
Good luck ,

I had a similar issue on a choked unit years back (although not a Yammie). Puching in the Key closed the choke ... but what I didn't realize (well right away at least) was that pushing in the key was over-riding the auto matic choke.

I'd try it without pushing in (as suggested above) and hopefulle you'll be pleasently surprised.

Absolutely nothing mentioned. That was the first place I looked.

Have you gotten to the bottom of this issue yet?

The Prime Start engines uses a elect. fuel enrichment valve to choke engine that works with a thermosensor, cold engine it chokes as heats up less choke and is not connected to ignition switch at all. When starting a Prime Start engine tilt engine down all the way, pump up fuel primer bulb firm, turn key to start position without giving engine any throttle at all(start at idle speed). If fails to start reprime primer bulb and start up.

I don't know if this was mentioned, but be sure to keep the high idle lever in the down position. This is very different for those of us who were previous other brand owners. I have the 2 strk 90 hp and had the very same starting issues until I kept the idle lever down.

Here's a couple of thread where we discussed the Prime Start on 90hp 2 smokes.

Good luck with it and hope this helps.
