I'm having a problem with my yamaha control box. I have a 2010 yamaha 9.9 outboard motor with elec trim. At first I couldn't get the controls out of neutral, after messing a bit, I can shift into forward or reverse but now I can't get it to go into neutral. The neutral button doesn't feel right when pushed...any help would really be appreciated...thanks

The button does not need to be pushed to put the motor into neutral. The button is to disengage the shift mechanism so that the throttle can be advanced without the motor being in gear.
If the idle speed of the motor is excessive it can result in a motor being hard to take out of gear.

You are correct boscoe99 and that is what I was trying to explain. I am unable to get the shift mechanism to disengage. Can you explain how the button disengages the shift mechanism so that the throttle can be advanced without the motor being in gear?
