Hello to all. Just found this forum. I've got a dilemma I hope some of you can possibly shed some light upon. I took my girl out to the River here in central Fla. Engine purred like a kitten all the way there.(probably a 6-7 mile run) Get ready to leave and she fires right up. We putter out of the Springs attempt to jump up on plane and she stalls. A little tough to start, but she finally fires up and runs across the lake like a champ and we go through a no wake zone then jump up and run for about two miles and hit another no wake zone and she stalls. I end up getting towed the final mile or so. During the tow I could start the motor with the cold start or choke button on the side of the throttle. I could rev it up as high as I wanted and let it go down to probably 600 rpm and she would stall right b/f she would actually be in "official" neutral. I could do this with the throttle forward or reverse. She would purr and not skip a beat at any rpm except 600 rpms or less. I have been told my linkage could have loosened and allowed idle rpm to drop below spec.. Does this sound about right? Where is the idle adj. screw on my motor I could not find it? I was told it was on the starboard side. Any help would be appreciated. Semper Fi, Ron

You sure the model isn't a F60TLR? Please verify the model #.
The F60TLR is a fuel injected engine, is your carbed or FI? There is no choke to play with on the FI engine, carbed, usually..
If it is carbed, and your choking it to get it running, sounds like the carbs or fuel system is the issue.
Also, is 600 RPM's in neutral or in gear?Scott

(if carbureted ).. My boo.
That doesn't sound like the correct model # either does it (what he posted)??Last edited by TownsendsFJR1300; 05-22-2014, 03:30 PM.Scott

I'm not familiar with your engine, the idle (to me sounds low). There's No simply idle screw to adjust it up. I believe its probably con*****ed by an Idle control valve electronically.
Others will chime in familiar with it.
Just as a side note, (basic mainatainance), did you check the under cowl Yamaha fuel filter for any crap or water in it? Should be a plastic cup, upside down, you should be able to see a filter in there. I'd make sure thats clean, no water or crap to start with..Scott

To my knowledge, no "idle adjustment screw" to speak of with the Fuel Injection, computer controled.
Here's a link and pic of your intake, throttle body, etc:
2006 and Later F60TLR Yamaha Outboard INTAKE 1 Diagram and Parts
Part #10 is the "Control valve assembly"
I believe I read Rodbolt has cleaned them but they do fail, (get very hot). Others here are familar with the unit.
Again, I do NOT have experiance with this valve. Someone else will have to chime in.

Just for future reference, that button you push so u can throttle up is called "fast idle", it allows you to idle the engine up w/out switching into gear.
How does it run when you get it on plane- does it "miss" or "stutter"??
Had a similar issue before- Turned out to be a fuel issue. Start simple
1) Check/drain fuel water separator ( may have one in bilge and one on engine)
2) Clean/replace main fuel filter ( prob close to the injectors- clear fuel bowl, filter in the top- It is also a fuel water separator- red washer floats if water in fuel)
3) lastly clean VST tank- It's a pain to get to on your motor- Behind the manifold on fuel rail side.
4) I'd prob change the plugs out to rule that out too, but I doubt that's the issue
Of course mine was gummed up ethanol in the VST tank....
I'm not a mechanic- Rodbolt or some of the other guys will have to help if the "simple solutions" above don't work

OK lets start with,
do you have a service manual for this motor?
Do you have any test equipment?
If the answer is no then I would take it to a Yamaha dealer that has trained techs and the proper equipment to test things.
These newer motors are like the newer vehicles you drive around in, they are just smart enough to force you to have the proper test equipment or you end up throwing parts at it with a blindfold on.
There is a problem with the motor so fix it,
trying to jack up a idle screw is not the answer, even if it had one to do it

there is NO idle adjustments on EFI motors.
I know there is a screw there but DO NOT dink with it.
no matter HOW tempting.
that screw nor the linkage is the issue.
most likely its a fuel issue.
but here again we start with the basics.
test compression,or better a leak down test.
test spark.
but DO NOT dink with the throttle shutter stop screw, no matter how many beers and buddies get involved.
once its verified that the engine is mechanically sealed and spark can be produced then start looking at fuel.
rail pressure?
when its idling unplug one injector at a time, does RPM drop?
