  • 06 F250 won't go into gear

My 2006 yamaha F250 will not engage into gear. Motor starts fine, prop spins in neutral and I can see both throttle cables in the motor working. When I go to put the motor in gear it only revs up and I hear nothing sounding like it is trying to shift in gear. What could be wrong?

Is the shifter cable attached at both ends?

More specifically, the outside cable sheath (at the engine end) and the other, inner cable attached to the shifter linkage?

Is the shifter linkage moving when shifted?

Is the throttle lever button stuck ( the black rubber button on side of shift level, that you depress for throttle only)? That can stick in if depressed, allowing only throttle but no shift cable movement. You can just pluck it out with a blunt object, like the ignition key or a blunt probe of some type. Then try the shift into & out of gear, with engine idling.
