  • correct 'gasket maker' for crankcase

rebuilding our 250hp ox66. service manual says to use only 'gasket maker' but does not specify a specific type. would i use a RTV or an anaerobic. is there a preference?

it says Gasket Maker and then says Yamabond separate. goggling Yamaha Gasket Maker comes up with Yamabond

an E-tec spe******t told me to use the anaerobic gasket maker back when i rebuilt our other power head. it has been fine for 3 years now but wasnt sure if it was actually the right thing to use or not

yet to find a NAPA that carries actual Loctite 518. They say they can order it. But they do carry Permatex Anaerobic Gasket Maker. Same sht. cheaper too.

Yamaha bond sets up too fast, 518 is the best.

Permatex 51813 is much easier to find, around here anyway.

I use CRC o6o64 carb cleaner or rubbing alcohol to clean it.
I don't use the primer/activator. makes it set way faster than I can move.

so does it set up Ok without using the activator?
                  just takes longer maybe?

It sets after it is put together, no air.

so were you using the primer/activator when you were saying it set too fast?

He was referencing the Yamabond as setting up too fast. They make an activator for 518. Haven’t heard of anyone actually using it. Stuff worked great on the fuel fittings. No tape needed.
