Harder to crank or harder to start?
Crank is the starter motor rotating the motor. Starting is the engine just beginning to run.
I don't see the low pressure fuel pumps being either issue. The motor uses a high pressure mechanical fuel pump to provide fuel to the injectors. A medium pressure electrical fuel pump provides fuel to the HP pump. The low pressure pumps merely keep a small tank filled with gasoline, in which the electric fuel pump is positioned.
You can pump the primer ball to do what the low pressure pumps do. If that fixes the problem then it would appear to be the low pressure fuel pumps. I don't think that is the problem however.
