  • Yamaha F225 Maintenance Questions

I just picked up my new (2005) boat, it came with a Yamaha F225 and this is the first 4 stroke I’ve owned. I have always done my own maintenance and was looking for some pointers.

1)Oil changes – How often? When should I do the first oil change on a new motor (how many hours).
2)I was told that the 4 strokes will use (burn) some oil, is that true?
3)Stick with the Yamaha brand oil? (I always used the Yamalube in my 2 stroke..) Was not sure if they used synthetic.
    4)Anything special I should do for break-in?
5)Anything good or bad about these motors?
    6)How do you like yours?

Thanks in advance for your assistance assistance.

HI, I have twin F225's It is very important that you read and follow the break in period instructions in the owners manuel Everything you do, as far as RPM, and for how long,Etc. is recorded by the computer, so follow the book as close as possible. The book asys to change the oil and filter at 20 hours, I did this and filled oil with Amsoil four stroke oil. I now have over 100 hours and I still cannot hear them at idel, have to look at the tach to see if they are running. I have not experieanced any "oil Burning. I change the oil at the end of the season, or every 100 hours. Use Amsiol, you will not regret it. I am totally happy with the F 225's I have have a couple of things go wrong, but they were quickly, and expretly taken care of by my dealer, under warranty.
Remember, the most expensive thing you can put in your motor is cheep oil.

        Dennis,
Thanks for the helpful reply. When I took delivery the dealer did not have the manuals and I am expecting them any day. So you’re happy with the Amsiol, I have never used it, but have heard it’s very good.

I am just very cautious, I like to be sure I am doing things correctly.. I usually do all my own maintenance and had planned on doing so with my new rig as well. Thanks for the advice!

Hi again, yes amsoil is what I use, and I recomend it. Also the best price that I have found for the oil filter is here on this web site for Yamaha oil filters I purchased the Siera replacement for the Yamaha oil filter, part # 69J-13440-00-00(Yamaha) at gomarine.com for about $6.00 each. I bought 12 and got them for $5.62 each I would hane much rather purchased Yamaha OEM filter, but was not about to lay out $22.00 each for a oil filter. I have used Siera in the past, and they "Meet and exceed" manufacturer's spec. What realy convinced me that they were good, was when I went to my local dealer, and saw that he was also using Siera. I hopes this helps.
