I gather you put too much up atop the drive shaft and maybe created a hydralic lock with grease(perhaps a blob of grease on the end of the shaft?)
If so, I'd try to reach up there with a long thin stick/rod with a thin rag taped to the end and try to wipe out as much as you can. Repeat as necessary.

Mercury cautions against putting too much grease on the top of a driveshaft as it might prevent the driveshaft from going fully up and into the crankshaft.
Must be a close fit.
I haver never read of Yam issuing a caution note about this.
If the lower units are installed I doubt you have a problem.
ALL outboard manufactures have issued warnings about EXCESSIVE lube on TOP of the shaft.
the crank is only drilled so deep.
to much lube between the top of the shaft and the bottom of the crank will tend to place upward pressure on the lower or thrust bearing and can cause bearing failure.
