• Trim tabs

I know this is not a yamaha outboard question, but are there any inexpensive(cheap) trim tabs out there? I have a 20.5 foot sport craft with a 225 yamaha on a armstrong bracket. The stern sits pretty low in the water and it seems to take awhile to get the boat on plane. How about the dolphin fin things. I don't have much to spend, but it needs somthing.
Thanks John

John::
take a look at volvo-penta site for QL trim-plate system...
it might bring up some cheap creative solutions!

John,
Don't waste your money on the "dolphin fin thing" - it will get you up on plane faster, but will also add drag and slow you down a bit since you are pulling it thru the water all the time.
Don't know about "cheap" trim tabs - you've got quite a bit invested already in a rig - go for quality. I've never used them, but I suggest you go over to another forum where I am a member
(maverickboats.com) and do a search on trim tabs.
The boat owners over there demand quality on all of their add-ons, might give you some ideas.
Good luck ,

I never liked the looks of the Dolphinfin, thik I'll stay away from that.
Jan I looked at the Volvo site and I haven't seen anything on trim tabs, I'll check again
Thanks

Ken,
I also looked at the maverick site. I live about 20 miles south of them.

Hey Ken,

I have one of these, in the small size, on a Yamaha 50HP.

http://www.basspro.com/servlet/catal...rTarget=browse

The 50 is mounted with the cavitation plate a couple of inches above the keel line. I got improved hole-shot and didn't loose anything on the topside.
Granted when "my" boat is on plane and trimmed this little foil is on top of the water. Not being pushed through it.
That said I don't think I would use one on a big outboard, but on my 50 this, and a prop from our friend over in Shreveport, made my 16 foot Xpress Bass boat rock. I was looking for a little stern lift as this 16' Xpress was weighted stern heavy. IE both batteries and fuel tank were mounted in the rear.
GPS 39MPH at 5750/5800RPM loaded with all my gear. Before (the foil) and after was the same. With a better hole shot and better bite in a turn. The staying on plane at a lower speed is debatable, as I never tried to see how slow I could go and stay on plane before installing this product.
It was also very hard for me to make that first hole in the cavitation plate, not knowing what the outcome would be. But on “my boat” with “my set-up” it worked better than I would have ever guessed.
Just my findings on this one product. YMMV

hkps1,
Looks like you have the best of both worlds with that hydrofoil add-on, more lift coming out of the hole, and no resistance on plane and trimmed out - nice.
And Marcus at Power Tech took care of you - glad to hear it.
Thanks for the info ,
