yamaha 200ETXD tilts by itself

hi all,

was out fishing on the bay trying for halibut on saturday and whild crusing to Oyster Point the engine starts to tilt up by itself, had to shut the engine down. restart engine tilt motor down and all is ok. while drifting at OP engine goes up again and tilt motor keeps running with engine off, turn off power for a few minutes then turn power back on lower engine and it's ok for now. again engine tilts up we turn off power again and wait, when we turn on power tilt motor keeps on running. won't be able to get home like this.

i'm thinking tilt switch but which one ? so we remove the hood and disconnect the tilt swith on the motor (easiest one to get to ), turn power on and tilt motor is not running any more. we still can control the tilt on the helm. so we get back to Alameda with no problems.

my question, is it a bad switch or relay ?

I am planning on replacing the switch on the motor, is that switch just a press fit ? has anyone replaced this switch before ? any help would be appreciated.

Which control unit do you have?
I have a 703 unit and had problems with the tilt switch.
If yours is the same, I'll re-post the solution for you that I used to fix it.
Let me know.

Sounds like the switch you unplugged (under the cowl) is shorted out inside (providing power to the up curcuit) as once it was disconnected, all worked fine.

Switches can fail over time, gunk up, etc. That switch especially is exposed to water splatter from regular operation.

You can test it with a meter and I suspect you'll find the one circuit (up curcuit) showing contact most of the time... Should it NOT be sealed (most likely is), you could pull it apart and clean the contacts.

Besides the contacts inside the switch, if any saltwater got inside the actual connector, the salt CAN MAKE A CIRCUIT. A cleaning of the internal connectors at the connector would eliminate that possibility.

Looks like Townsends has got the answer for you. It could well be in that switch under the cowl! If you don't come right, I'll re-post the method I used to fix the binnacle control unit switch for you.
