  • Tilt/trim 200hpdi TLRZ

My motor is a 2001 200hpdi TLRZ and yesterday while on the water the tilt/trim failed. It won't raise. It does make the "bottomed out" noise when I hit the down part of the rocker switch. The same symptoms exist when I use any one of the 3 switches on board (upper/lower/cowling).

Checking prior posts I'm led to believe the problem may be the relay and I have two questions:

    a) How do I test the relay?

    b) If it is indeed faulty, will I need to buy the entire relay assembly or just part of it?

    Thanking you in advance,

    Tony in Tampa

Can we assume the tilt motor does NOT do anything when trimmed up(no humm, flat dead?)

To rule out the T&T itself, simply reverse the two wires from the T&T assemby to the battery (by passing the switch and relay). It should go up and down as you reverse the wires.

Part #14 is aparently your relay in question: 2001 VZ200TLRZ Yamaha Outboard ELECTRICAL 3 Diagram and Parts.

Others will chime in (a shop manual, if you plan on keeping the engne, is well worth the $)

Its apparently the same T&T relay as my F150, I'll PM you with how to test

      Thanks for your reply Scott.

I went to the boat, engaged the rocker switch for "up" and it clicked. Yesterday with the motor running I couldn't hear it. Not only that, but after hitting the "up" twice just now, on the third try the motor raised! I took it down some and tried to raise it again, but no doing....just clicking.

Does this change the nature of my problem or can the relay fail intermittently?

When I test the T&T, where should I connect the leads to the battery? On the terminals of the relay or elsewhere?

Thanks for your suggestion and I do indeed need a shop manual.

      Thank you-

The switches do gunk up over time and sometimes won't give a good connection(and thus NOT work). IF, its happening with the control switches and the engine mounted switch, the issue likely ISN'T in the switch (or its a big coincidence) and likely the relay.

I just replaced my starter relay when it wouldn't do anything but "click" 5 times. Try #6 it worked. And of course, it passed bench tests after that as I used the boat ALL day wihth no more issues. I'm not getting stuck and just replaced it. I haven't cut the relay apart yet, it was obviously working with the click HOWEVER, the connection to run power to the starter was nil/crappy and the starter didn't get that signal.

Yours won't leave you stranded, mine would have (since learned how to hot wire it and by pass the starter relay/key).

Re just testing the T&T motor only, theres 2 wires that come off the unit and plug into the harness. Simply unplug the harness. Then run each of the two T&T wires to the battery (your by-passing all the switches and relays). Flip the connectors over and the unit will go in the opposite direction if the T&T assembly ITSELF is ok.

I'm not familar with how your T&T relay works but I suspect if it failed once, it won't fix itself and eventually, only get worse. In your case, again, an inconvienance...

Needless to say and good preventive maintainance, check and clean your battery terminals and if equipped with a main "Perko" type on/off switch, check that as well. (likely not your issue but worth checking)

***I did send you a PM (check your messages) on how to specifically check that relay in detail.

I just bypassed the relay assembly and the T&T motor works perfectly, and I've checked all my connections, which are fine.

My next move is going to be pulling the relay and checking it for continuity.

          Thank you once more~

Problem is fixed with the installation of a replacement relay. Thanks to those of you that helped me isolate the problem.
