  • 06 225 Vmax Wont start or turnover

My Ranger has a push button start & when I push it I hear one click. The batteries are charged. The connections are tight. It worked fine 2 weeks ago when I was out. I had a mechanic suggest it was a starter relay. Ire placed it & no difference. Any thoughts? is there a fuse that could cause this? All other power works fine.
I appreciate everyone reading this & any suggestions you might have.

get out your hand held volt meter and start testing while under a load to see where the problem is.

If the relay is clicking, sounds like bad battery, connection, or cable

      Fuse? Yup.

I near sent a GPS unit back just before checking the harness fuse. Found it corroded, but not blown. Passed enough juice to fire it up, but then heated for increased resistance. Since the GPS protects itself from under voltage, it looked like it had issues.

Your connections may be good, but the cables may not be. I suggest bypassing with jumpers to check or just replace them. They're cheap. You will know as soon as you touch the switch.

Do the simple stuff first, have you changed the battery with a known good one? did you remove the battery terminals and cleaned them, or do they "look clean" looking clean without removing them has caught many a person out.

you can test everything in the starting circuit in roughly 15 minutes with a 12 dollar digital multi meter.
cables are over 250 dollars for that engine from Yamaha.
much to simple to simply test things first.

          \ do a forum search.
          keywords voltage drop test.

Thanks guys. I see now there is many posts on this & I will try that first thing Monday morning but I'm pretty sure it isn't cables though as I tried jumper cables from truck to motor & still nothing. After removing the shields & pushing the start button the shaft rises but doesn't turn the flywheel. The flywheel turns freely so it isn't there. Why wouldn't the starter have enough power to turn the shaft? The solenoid? The starter? Are they one & the same if they have to be replaced? Is there another explanation?

Turns out the brushes were frozen. Once they were loosened, cleaned, etc it started right up. Saved me $400 over a new starter AND a week down time.
              thanks for everyone's advice.
