My 9.9hp 1989 Yamaha is not shifting into gear after I changed the water pump. It seemed to go into forward and reverse here at home but when I actually went out to use it it would not go into drive.
Rodbolt 17 was kind enough to respond on another problem and mentioned I needed to put the shaft down which puts it in gear after disconnecting the barrel nut, put the shifter at the helm into reverse then reconnect the barrel nut.
So Rodbolt if you are reading this, read this,
I disconnected the barrel nut and forced the shaft down and it locked the prop into gear, then put the shifter in reverse at the helm. Then pulled the barrel nut down and screwed it to the threads. It now stays in gear and and will not go in neutral or drive. The shaft does not pull up or down when I shift it. There is a shaft above in the engine compartment that moves up or down when I shift it. Part of the shifting mechanism. The part that has a round 1/2" part on it is above a item that looks like a rounded cam. I am thinking the round 1/2" part should be under the cam to force it to shift. Could that be the problem?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I had it in neutral when I removed the lower housing and I guess it should have been in reverse before I removed it.
