  • 9.9hp not shifting/ Rodbolt17 please read

My 9.9hp 1989 Yamaha is not shifting into gear after I changed the water pump. It seemed to go into forward and reverse here at home but when I actually went out to use it it would not go into drive.

Rodbolt 17 was kind enough to respond on another problem and mentioned I needed to put the shaft down which puts it in gear after disconnecting the barrel nut, put the shifter at the helm into reverse then reconnect the barrel nut.
So Rodbolt if you are reading this, read this,
I disconnected the barrel nut and forced the shaft down and it locked the prop into gear, then put the shifter in reverse at the helm. Then pulled the barrel nut down and screwed it to the threads. It now stays in gear and and will not go in neutral or drive. The shaft does not pull up or down when I shift it. There is a shaft above in the engine compartment that moves up or down when I shift it. Part of the shifting mechanism. The part that has a round 1/2" part on it is above a item that looks like a rounded cam. I am thinking the round 1/2" part should be under the cam to force it to shift. Could that be the problem?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I had it in neutral when I removed the lower housing and I guess it should have been in reverse before I removed it.

I never said shift the helm into reverse, just the engine.

myself I would drop the case, carefully test that it will shift N and R, DO NOT pull it up into F.

pull to far and the shift cam will disengage the plunger and requires propshaft removal to reinstall.

reinstall the case with the engine linkage in R and the gearcase in R and assemble the barrel nut. then shift the engine through the gears then reattatch the shift cable as nessasary.

My luck. Since I was doing this myself I had my daughter shift it for me at the helm so I could see what was going on and noted the shifting cable was not moving the linkage anymore.. It appears I have broken the shifting cable. Looked at the shifting housing at the helm and everything is moving properly. So that is where I am at now. Need to buy a new cable.

did you try disconnecting the cable and manually moving the shift linkage to test the engine linkage ?

No. At this point I have a friend who is a Yamaha tech. He is going to purchase a couple of cables and then after we get this problem corrected we will service both engines. I will update you when we are finished and let you know the outcome. Should be able to do this in the next few days.

you need to inspect both ends to make sure what is moving and what is not.
Maybe it just came off in the con*****er or broke the plastic end piece

Just finished replacing 2 new cables. The shifting cable was broken. I believe I broke it when my daughter shifted it & I did not have the barrel nut connected. My fault on that one. In anycase the mechanic came to my home and we both installed the new cables and it works great now. The water out of the tell tale is still coming out normally too. I will take it out this week and hopefully it all works well. Thanks for your advice Rodbolt. By the way, my throttle cable needed to be replaced as it was rusted on the top of the cable even though it worked fine. It was a matter of time before I had problems with it.
