  • No tell tail on 9.9 hp/Please help

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I posted earlier on my 1989 4stoke Yamaha with no tell tail. I always started it weekly w/ nice volume of water coming out. Then the next week no tell tale. Purchased new water pump from this site and installed it. No problem with impeller noticed. Still no tell tail. Then forced compressed air through plastic streamer jet for tell tail and it started working a little, then more air and it works great. Next week it works ok then slowly lost the tell tale again. My friend said the water was coming out hot. When I came home I blew in it again and it starts working and then slowly loses it. If I blow air into the plastic port where the water comes out, the air comes out blowing like there is no restrictions at the water intake. I cannot imagine where there is a blockage. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Update: I thought I fixed it last week and same thing water trickles out of the tell tail now and warm. Also not sure where the thermostat is as I thought of taking it out but cannot find it in the manual

carefully trace the water line back from the discharge nipple, to the fuel pump cooler if used,to the T fitting that goes to the two head nipples and the one that tracks on back to the T stat outlet.
hot water at the tell tale is rather normal on that F9.9.
so is clogging of the cyl head passages between the ex cover area to the nipples in the cyl head.

Thank you for your reply. Since I posted I found a small tie wrap and was able to insert it into the nipple ports in the head. I then removed the lower unit again because my transmission was not shifting into gear when I used it for the first time yesterday after I installed the water pump even though it worked for me when I put it back together, I found the rubber gromit was pushed up on the water tube so I slid it back down to the lower portion of the tube and put it back together. I started the engine and water is coming out normally on the tell tail for now. Yippeee for now! However, I cannot adjust the shifter properly to go into drive now. When I removed the lower unit I could move the shift lever up or down and it would work properly as far as going into forward or reverse. Some how the problem is in the shifting cable adjustment I think. Not sure what to do here as of yet. Any suggestions on that would be helpful

there is NO adjustment on the lower to mid section.
        its simply a shift disconnect.
can it be put together wrong? yep.
easiest way to reassemble it is manually push the shift shaft down while turning the prop to insure full rev gear engaugement.

then shift the motor into reverse until the MOTOR detent clicks. then assemble the case to the midsection and then hook up the shift disconnect barrel screw.

UNLIKE some older chysler,Force and Suzuki motors Yamaha NEVER used that disconnect barrel nut as a shift adjustment point.

Thanks again for the reply. I disconnected the barrel nut and forced the shaft down and it locked the prop into gear, then put the shifter in reverse at the helm. Then pulled the barrel nut down and screwed it to the threads. It now stays in gear and and will not go in neutral or drive. The shaft does not pull up or down when I shift it. There is a shaft above in the engine compartment that moves up or down when I shift it. Part of the shifting mechanism. The part that has a round 1/2" part on it and is above a item that looks like a rounded cam. I am thinking it should be under the cam to force it to shift. Could that be the problem?
