didn't have to - inherited it from previous owner;
a little surface discoloration but it will last forever,
despite being installed inches from the batteries - a nasty environment
"full" - meaning that it "weighs" ~1.2 g/cc
yellow tape is about the same
white tape is often ~0.8 and "cheap" versions as little as ~0.4
PTFE tape is strange stuff, IMO
apparently the raw material can be "stretched" in manufacture
the yellow and pink have not been stretched: "full density"
but the white has been - creating "voids"
so although the thickness of the tape is the same, regardless of color
there is "less material" in the same length piece of typical white,
vs yellow or pink
building codes require only full density tape for piping used for gases
(natural gas, propane, etc)
and the yellow color is simply to assure that is what is being used
there is a misconception in some quarters that yellow tape is for "gas": gasoline
because it is somehow "resistant" - while the white is not.
Nonsense; they are both PTFE
and actually, the white is "pure" - 100% PTFE
the yellow or red - only ~99.5% PTFE
the rest is the pigment
there has been quite the proliferation in recent years
green - "oil free" for oxygen lines
(not that there is any oil "in" the others,
but apparently made using machinery that is not oil-lubricated
to avoid any possible "contamination"
and you can get added constituents to the PTFE
nickel, copper, ceramic
Very interesting...learning something new everyday. We use it on O2 systems on Aircraft and have a special set of CLEAN tools just for that work.
More than one airplane has been set on fire from people using greasy wrenches on O2 systems.
Good info Mr Fairdeal. No O2 systems for me. My greasy tools serve a purpose preventing rust in the salt environment. I always marveled at the burning of steel wool in a 100% O2 environment. Chemistry class......
