  • Power Trim Leaking

    Hi Everyone,
New to your group and seeing if you have problem this would be a great place for answers. A first time Yamaha owner, my new 2011 Yamaha F150 which is a 2012 EdgeWater Boat factory equipped engine purchased October 2013. Prepping vessel for the 2014 season, it was noticed hydraulic fluid leaking both sides. Approximately 6 hours on engine. Is this coherent trait with these engines that need periodic maintenance ?

    Thanks Everyone !

looks like someone left the rams extended, not a good idea.
but now its time to remove the rams, inspect the bores and replace the piston orings and cap orings and wipers.

And to add, no its not common. I have an 06 F150, no leaks there what so ever, original seals/fluid too... I do keep my engine rinsed off and the engine in the down/run position on a boat lift.

Probably won't work but cheap enough and easy to try. On motorcycle fork oil seals, when crap gets inbetween the seal and the fork leg (same as your piston and cylinder) you can either slip a slim piece of 35 mm film inbetween the shaft and the seal, in a pulling up motion, to dislodge any crap that may be in there. It works a good part of the time on forks.

As Rodbolt posted, if the shaft is nicked boogered up, it won't work.

Sealmate makes a specific tool for this: http://sealmate.net/?gclid=CPWA2cqOprgCFZRj7AodqSEAsg

      Is it still under warranty?

        Thanks for the feedback !
Yes boat and engine are new, with 6.8 hours and 2.0 hours being sea trail.
Engine stored in down position and cannot say rams were leaking upon the down season storage (not that I was looking). Boat is used in the Upper Chesapeake Bay in brackish water (no salt). Being a Mercury and Etec owner never experienced leaking trim units during storage or in seasonal use.

Hopefully repair / replacement is not timely !

Its odd its leaking that soon with with the ram in.

But, no its not normal (especially in your circumstances...)

Could you please once the dealer fixes it, what the issue was? Just curious

They likely replaced all of the seals that keep the fluid in, under pressure on those rams.

Odd it got nicked at the factory....

Re your PM, I'll post later..

not sure what you are calling outer seals
I thought there was only o rings and the outer dust wipers

Dust seal fitted to trim cylinder end screws retained with circlip.
Myself coming from a automotive manufacturing background, my F150 could have been built on assembly high absentee day with possibly a little Shoshu involved

an oil leak would have to come from inside o ring leaking not the dust wiper

As long as it does not leak oil anymore is the main thing
