  • Speedo help please

I have a 175 LTXD. I believe from 1990. I want to replace my digital speedometer. The parts manual says it is 6Y5-83500-A0-00 SPEEDOMETER ASSEMBLY, however it says that it is no longer available. Is there a newer model that plugs and plays as a substitute? Does it have a matching meter for 6Y5-83500-03-00 METER LCD TACH-TRIM-OIL, METER ASSY. It is available but I do not want this to look different than the possible substitute model for the speedometer?

I am hoping to replace both as easily as possible with losing functionality.

I cut and paste this from a similar question of my own. Do look at the MRP link that Boscoe99 provided for me and hopefully someone else will confirm.

The 6Y5-8350T-83-00 is the latest dash number for 2004 and earlier model Yamaha motors.

BTW, I just replaced all four of my gauges due to the LCD;s being sun and age damaged. Boats.net had the fairest price, free shipping over 250.00 and what a difference it made!

Now be careful as you said 175LTXD and I believe the last letter "D" indicates 2005 manufacture. Being that close to the cut off year, you'd better check the model number and year of manufacture. Rest assured though, there is a replacement digital tachometer for you.

I am just trying to help, but I think it best that you wait for some one else a bit smarter and sober than I am at this moment.

A Yamaha speedometer will work with any Yamaha model motor. It does not care.

The latest part number is shown in the marine rigging book. Order the original part number and you will get the latest version.

          Speedometer question / clarification

Correction! My engine is a model 175 ETXD. Does that make any difference in the advice? Thanks for helping a novice!

I bought the 6Y5-83570-S6-00 Speedo, but not all the wire colors were the exact same as mine. I have a 1991

GPS won't provide speed through the water which is what is provided by a Yamaha speedometer.

If speed through the water is what is desired then the Yamaha speedometer will provide more accurate information than will the GPS.

You will never be allowed to fly an airplane if you cannot understand the difference between speed through a medium (water/air/space/Etc.) and speed between two points in space.

No pilot lands his airplane using GPS. He would be a fool to do so. He will use the equivalent of a speedometer as used in a boat.

Are you wrong about everything that you type or is it just all that we have seen you type to date? Just how does a GPS calculate your speed thru the water while drifting?

My Garmin GPS does all of that and something the smart phone doesn't do. Its tied into my marine radio. When the distress button is pushed on the radio, I don't have to say a word, it automatically gives the CG my exact co-ordinates..

I can also set trips, set a spot off shore (IE, a reef), set the GPS to go and it will.

I also like having a water pressure style speedometer. It gives you the true speed your traveling OVER WATER, especially if the tide is moving.

With that said, I also have the "speedometer wheel" for the depth finder/temp unit that also give me a speed(that's adjustable for the boat style itself)

If drifting, not anchored, my GPS will certainly log the drift speed(same as idleing, just slower), (down here, usually .5- 1.5 MPH where I feed the fish) and with the "tracking" turned on, will show the track of the entire day including say drifting for a half hour, etc..

If your moving, it'll track it, document it (with a solid line on the screen) and tell you how fast.

Any windier than that, I don't go out..
