Lower unit question 30 hp yami

I was filling the lower unit on a 30hp Yamaha and noticed 2 factory holes in the casting next to the oil level plug looks like vent or drain holes. All of a sudden the oil started coming out of the 2 holes and not the oil level hole????? Is their frost plugs or something like that in their that could be busted and the oil is taking the path of least resistance????
