seems like I remember seeing a ring type of tool the same size as the inside of a flywheel that you slipped over the stater to set the proper position on a motor. but I do not remember what brand or model motor it was.
    maybe Evnrude.
may not have been even an outboard

you would think if it had a set distance they would have something in the specs on it

If Yamaha designed it, there is probably some special tool for setting.
but I have no idea, so service manual probably would help
36mm nut is a walk in the park. Torqued to 200 Lb Ft on my motor.

going back to play with the boat this weekend. does anyone know for sure if there is going to be adjustment for the lighting coil? will it just bolt in one place or will i somehow have to figure out how to gap it?

Rodbolt can tell us by memory. I would craft a very specific separate thread asking the question with his name in topic to make sure he sees it.

Well if you wanted to aggravate Boscoe you could post it anyway.

Won't aggravate me. I get mirth from some of rodnuts replies.

I just sent him a question of my own.

Won’t be back at the lake to work on things until Thursday. Don’t look forward to the task but trying to carry an arsenal of tools with me—-pullers, strap wrench, impact wrench, and of course pb blaster. Do have a propane torch as last resort to add some heat if all else fails.

just remember he flywheel and shaft need to be clean and dry when putting back together.
do not be putting any lub on them

thanks for the tip. i had no idea that leaving lube on shaft would be an issue. may i ask why? only reason i can think of would be it might possibly be more likely to loosen in future?

Rod mentioned it not long ago on another thread.
interference fit holds the flywheel in place.
key is just there to help get it into alignment.
lub it and it can spin and shear the key easier
