  • My Yammie 15 spent the night under water

Yeah. The boat sunk and my outboard along with it. I took out the plugs and sprayed WD 40 into the cylinders and pulled the cord repeatably. I took off the carb, dismantled and hosed it down as well. Shot WD 40 through the reed valves. Also did the fly wheel and a general hose down of the exterior and the electrics. With new fuel and plugs and a 24 hour dry-out, the engine started and runs well. Am I okay here? Will electrics begin to corrode in a day or two? Should I replace any parts at this point to avoid problems in the future?
    Thanks all,
    Bry

I would have preferred to get it started sooner than leaving it a day to "dry out" that day might have started rust in the bearings, but, it's done now, keep running it as much as possible and hope.

      Salt water or fresh water?

Run it as much as possible. May want to disconnect all plugs, connectors and spray contact cleaner in them to get out any water in them.

Thanks guys and sorry for the delay. Wifi in the third world is sporadic at best.
Engine is still running. Starts on first pull. And yeah... salt water I'm afraid. My worry now is corrosion in the electrics. Put in new plugs but what about coils? Any thing else I should attend to? Thirty years of boating and this has never happened before.

Okay. Six days after the dunking, I had trouble starting the engine this morning. Electrics? Please give me an idea where to start. I rely on this engine to get me ashore each day. Thanks all.... Bry

Start by some very basic trouble shooting, check for spark, check for fuel, is the safety lanyard clip in place?

Thanks ausnoelm... and yep! Got spark, fuel is fresh and pumping, and the clip is in place. This morning I removed the coil assemblies buffed the contacts, sprayed with contact cleaner and dabbed on the electrolytic grease. Then took off every wire I could get to and did the same. I sprayed WD40 up under the fly wheel again. Are those magnetos up under there? I left the engine cowl off for a couple of hours and let it bake in the sun. I opened the fuel tank vent. With choke, it started on the second pull, idled, and seemed to run well at speed. What next to avoid future problems?
                  Again, think you...

I think you are going to have to continue doing what you have been. Ideally everything should have been washed with fresh water to get rid of the salt first. Every surface should have been cleaned and dried but that still won't get to the places where salt water will hide. That is in places like wire connections particularly the cutout lanyard, stator and ignition coils, and ingress into wires wicking up into the ends or through broken insulation.

Thanks zenoahphobic. I'm kinda limited, living on a sailboat. I had about three gallons of drinking water and a few gallons of rain water. And certainly no hose. The best I could do was hose everything down with a can of WD40. I ordered a new coil yesterday. And will order another as soon as the first is delivered (it's an import duty thing). The engine runs well enough now, but tomorrow? Who knows. And no Yamaha Dealer in the area.
                      Thanks again,
