Loss of power

2006 hpdi 200 loss of power. What is weird is that I give it gas in gear and it will rev to 2600rpm, but if I touch throttle in neutral it kills.

Motor is a vz200tlr seriel#1002554

nothing weird about it.
in N it runs on 4 cylinders.
if you have two other fouled plugs it simply wont go.
I have seen 4 out of 6 plugs foul and the motor would fire up and die the instant the key was released.
first thing I would do is inspect the plugs.

above 1200 or so it drops TWO more cylinders.
yet I have customers that can get 4200 on two cylinders.
the Z 200 was a plug eater.
but start with the basics, fuel pressure test, can use a volt meter.
compression test.
spark test.
can make a homemade spark tester.
I have described how to make one.
or take it to a trained tech that is familiar with the z and vz motors.

I never understood why folks rev up the rpms in neutral because, as you noted, it's totally useless. With that said, can you detail what harm could be caused by high rpms in neutral. I'm curious.

no load run away, heard it can get away and blow things up, but never heard of it happening to people I know

If the engine rev's that high, (at least on a four stroke), the valves can "float" and kiss a piston

on a two stroke it is very hard on the wrist pins.
EFI/DFI motors wont suffer a runaway.
older carbed engines can.
I had a runaway on an old big twin 40.
was interesting to say the least.

I knew a fellow with brand new Honda CBX motorcycle with a in line 6 engine...4 valves per cylinder I believe.

Blew a shift while at almost red line going feom second to third right in front of a bunch of us watching. Put the tach right off the scale and floated all the valves. I think he bent them all...or most of them anyway...
