Swivel bracket removal steps

Can someone give me the sequence for removing the swivel bracket on a 2001 yamaha 25 hp model mshz?

Can it be done from the bottom by removing the lower unit or does the power head have to come off?

Trying to decide if this is something I want to try and do myself or not.

I like your name,, I grew up fishing Lake Bistineau,, love it there, about your question, if by swivel bracket you are also talking about the steering knuckle, the power head has to come off..

Small world...I guess a Lake Bistineau stump is why this bracket has cracked.

Is there someplace online that lists step by step how to remove the swivel bracket? Is this something the average person should let a shop do? How many hours labor should a shop charge for this repair?

You need to get a Yamaha service manual for your motor, it will have the steps needed to remove/ replace that bracket.

I have no idea how many man hours are needed to R&R it, but I believe you have to take motor apart way more than you would think.
Power head, upper case, steering bracket, and then the swivel bracket.

Depending how well all the bolts come out, it still may be more that you would want to do yourself.
Contact your local Yamaha shop and ask them about the price they would charge

no need to tear into the swivel bracket.
simply unbolt the motor,lay it on its back.
remove the tilt tube and whatever parts of the tilt lock as nessasary and replace that clamp bracket.
no need to remove the powerhead nor lower unit.
depending on corrosion maybe 2.5 hours.

Confused

Aren't the clamps one solid piece of aluminum casting that makes up the swivel bracket?

Does anyone think this could be welded? Pros/cons to welding? Clamps are cracked on both sides but not broken all the way across.

looking at the pic it looks like the swivel bracket #15 is the one with the cracks not the clamp brackets #1 & #2

I finally got a look at the second pic. the first didn't come in well.
you definatly cracked the swivel bracket.
you will need to remove the powerhead and lower unit.
then remove the lower pan.
then remove the upper and lower mounts/nuts and slide the ex housing off;\
then unbolt the motor and disassemble the swivel bracket from the two clamp brackets.
TAKE CAREFUL pictures and notes as the reassembly portion of the service manual is sketchy at best.

with no corrosion issues should take 6 to 8 hours.

only hard part is reassembling the tilt lock mechanisms.
like I said the manual is a bit sketchy on that part.
the rest is rather simple.
if its tiller handle remove the throttle controls from the powerhead as a unit.
use a 6mm nut to hold the assy together while the powerhead is off.
takes about 20 min to remove the powerhead and about 15 to remove the lower.
no need to remove carbs.
fuel lines,electrical,shift ,throttle,choke,tell tale hose powerhead mounting bolts and it pops off.

never had any luck with welding the clamps nor the bracket.

update

Well, I chickened out and hired a guy to do the repair. Cost me $300 which I thought was a good deal. However, when I went to pick it up, he told me he tried to order new gaskets, but it was going to take too long to get them in. So he went ahead and put it all back together. He said the old gaskets were still in good shape.

So, how worried should I be that the various gaskets were not replaced? I took it out and ran it some and everything seemed to be fine.

Are there things I should make sure to look for? I will be taking it out again this weekend. I have 90 days to get back to him with any problems.

if the gaskets were not torn up and he used some rtv sealant I don't think you have anything to worry about.to check if the powerhead gasket is leaking take the top cowling off in the water while stopped of course give the motor some revs and look around the base of the powerhead to see if any water is leaking from there..but I think your fine....
