  • Shift Shaft leak

My mechanic pulled my lower unit to replace water pump and did a pressure test. He said there was a slight leak in the shift shaft seal. He said he was going to replace the shift shaft and drive shaft seals. My question is .....would a slight leak in the shift shaft cause any water intrusion into the lower unit? The lower gear case fluid was greyish in color when we winterized it. Thanks

Yes it can let water in

There is already water getting in...as the gear oil is grey, but I guess you know that. Probably be prudent to replace all the seals in the LU and then you know what you got.

      I like your user name...lol

Thanks for the replies. I guess I will tell him to do the prop shaft seal as well, like you said then I know what I am working with.

there are o rings also sealing the carrier to the lower unit

cost will be a lot higher doing everything.
If the only thing leaking is the shift shaft seal, I would just fix the leaking seals

Well I don't think he changed those o rings but he did change the shift shaft, driveshaft and propshaft and tested. Held test and good to go. Coming in the am to bolt it back on, splash on Sat if I finish the bottom paint.
