Hard to start with key push in choke. Must use hand choke sometimes or foot throttle some times.

Why, oh why, do folks almost never ever provide their model identity?

Do they think the all knowing Master Mechanic Mr. Rod Bolt is clairvoyant as well?

Is it that you have done so much now, for so long, with so little, that it is thought that you can do all things with nothing?

We are guessing that your model Yamaha has a solenoid activated choke. Without the exact model identity very few can know for sure. Many, many, many Yamahas don't have manual choke mechanisms.

A Yamaha with Pro V on the cowling is usually a P200TLR(X). However, Yamaha did not offer a P200TLR(X) for the 1989 model year. Therefore, there is some uncertainty as to what you actually have.

Anyway, have you inspected the solenoid to find out why it is not working? Might have come disconnected (electrically or mechanically), it might have simply crapped out, it might be stuck due to a lack of preventative maintenance or perhaps there is a key switch or wiring issue that is preventing the solenoid from receiving electrical power when the key is pushed in to the choke position.

If you are pulling a manual choke knob to activate the choke mechanism, or are doing it at the carburetor directly, then you are doing what the solenoid should be doing for you. Inspect the choke solenoid.

Model number P200TLRQ. Went fishing yesterday afternoon. Fished for 30 or 40 mins. Engine would not start could the fuel pumps be leaking.

            P200TLRQ is a 1992 model year motor.

A motor that won't start can be the result of many different issues. No spark, not enough fuel, too much fuel, etc.

Based on what little is known, it would appear to be a fuel related issue.

Inspect the choke linkage from the solenoid to the carburetor. Does the choke plate close when the key is pushed in (with the key in the ON position) and does it open when the key is released?

the p200plrq is NOT a prime stert motor and requires operator interaction when cold starting.
cold start procedure should be prime the engine, advance the throttle, push the choke and then crank the engine while holding in on the choke.

poor battery connections or a weak battery can allow the solenoid plunger to not remain fully seated when cranking.

see why model numbers are rather important?
you said it was an 89 model and Yamaha says they did not offer a P 200 for the 89 production run.
