  • Yamaha fuel gauge 6Y5-2818R-32 quoting convention

    Hi there,

I am trying to get a new fuel sender to match the Yamaha fuel gauge 6Y5-2818R-32.

In the manual for the fuel gauge, Yamaha describes how you can adjust the toggles on the gauge.

    YAMAHA 5-105 ohms
    USA 30-230 ohms
    EUROPE 180-0 ohms

However, Yamaha hasn't clarified whether their convention is to show the resistance reading on the left hand side when the tank is empty or full. In other words, under EUROPE 180-0 ohms, is the 180 referring to a full tank or an empty tank?

Under USA 30-230 ohms, is the 30 referring to a full tank or an empty tank.

I would appreciate some guidance, please.

Yamaha does not need to clarify anything. You are overthinking this.

Are you in the USA? If so, I think that all you will find are senders that are ABYC types having values of 33 - 240 ohms. Just use that type sender and set the gauge to the US type sender.

You are not going to find two different types of USA senders. By that I mean you won't find one type that has 33 ohms when the float is up and another type that has 240 ohms when the float is up.

      Hi Boscoe99,

Thank-you for your feedback. I am not in the USA and have been given contradictory information by a Yamaha dealer here in Australia (he said one thing, and then something else later). Can you please tell me, absolutely definitively, whether, under the specification "USA 30-230 ohms", the 30 ohms means that the float is down (tank is empty) or up (tank is full)?

Other gauge (and sender) manufacturers provide this information quite explicitly.

Your initial response seems to suggest that you are not too sure yourself. It is imperative that Yamaha provides some clarity.

why not just hook it up and move the float arm to see .
My guess( as I do not know for sure myself) is low ohms is low level, but that is only a guess as how the low # come first on the US mode.
Might hook up a resister with the proper ohms to see how it reacts

There is absolutely, positively, no shortage of surety on my part.

If it is imperative that Yamaha provides some clarity with respect to this matter, then why aren't you directing your questions directly to Yamaha Australia?

If one dealer gives you one answer and another dealer gives you a different answer, why query five dealers and take the four out of five, or three out of five, answers that agree with each other.

33 - 240 senders are only made one way. The way in which it will work correctly when installed in the tank and connected to a Yamaha analog or multi-function gauge if that gauge is set to the 33 - 240 position.

Finally, if you would take some time to do some actual research, instead of simply asking a question here, and then trying to argue with an absolute, positive, answer that you are given, you might be better served.

You are in Australia. Australia is more closely allied with Europe that the USA. Shouldn't you be considering a European sender and not a USA type sender?

            Hi Boscoe99,

Many thanks for your authoritative response, I appreciate your help. I think that you have given me a better answer than I would have got from Yamaha Australia. I had actually thought that Yamaha representatives mediated this forum, and could step in and provide advice as required.

99Yam40 - I was trying to work out which type of replacement sender to buy.

              There you go, thinking again.

This is a Yamaha US dealer's website. They (this dealer boats.net) may or may not respond to any given question. Yamaha USA (equivalent of Yamaha Aurstralia) have a customer support organization but they respond to phone calls only. They (Yam USA) do not monitor nor respond to queries raised at this website, as far as I know.

Well looks like I was completely wrong on my guess

I always get it backwards also. Just the opposite of what intuition would lead one to think it should be.
