as a small child, I heard my mother use the term, when the car wasn't working right -
since it was clear that she had no idea what she was talking about - I was never sure what she meant
and since then, I've never used it myself - but I see it used occasionally
such as this curious post today on another forum:
"However, on the Starboard engine I turn on the key and there is no alarm and no pump kicking on.
It does crank but does not turn over.
If I leave the key in the on position for about 30 seconds I do hear the pump kick on but not turn off.
It appears to continue running. The alarm continues to sound and I cannot turn the engine over. "
(btw my mother has been dead for years, so it couldn't have been her post)
