  • Case Study: "Aftermarket" T/T Motor

    So back in October 2016, the original t/t motor on my F225TXRD crapped out - the brushes wore down too far

    when I disassembled it, the aluminum base/brush holder assembly fell apart due to corrosion

    Not available as a spare part - so rebuilding out of the question.

    With 11+ years, 1600 hrs on the outboard - no complaints about how the original held up.

    But a new Yamaha replacement: $588.85 list?

    Ha - not when eBay has brand new "aftermarket" for $120 !

    So that's what i installed

    Less than two months later, the motor housing was already starting to rust - so in Dec 2016 I carefully wire brushed, primed, and painted:

    Fast forward to July 2017 -

    despite the additional surface treatment, rust coming from every seam and joint;

    Jan of this year - really looked bad ( but still running fine)

    But by that time - I had found a real Yamaha part (in original sealed carton) at a great discount on eBay:

    Anyone want to buy a slightly used, very rusty but fully functional "aftermarket" t/t motor?

      Thanks for the photos and post. Interesting.

      I guess it's like the old saying "You get what you pay for"

          Let me finish.....spray tilt/trim motor, pump, all with white lithium grease.......never any corrosion. Lithium grease sets up on there and stays for a long time....re-spray as needed....
