  • I'm starting my engine on a stand and got it to turn over but my cdi/ecu fried

I bought a 2000 yamaha f80ltry. It's an 80 hp 4 stroke. When I bought it it didn't run, no spark. So I bought a cdi and now I checked for spark, affirmative. Just to clarify, i had the negative connected to the starter body, and the positive on the screwdriver. But just when the engine fires up, it blows the fuse and the cdi starts to let out smoke. Help! What am I doing wrong?

Can't view video....says it is private.

I'd like to see the video to see if it is in fact the CDI or the Voltage Regulator that is right under the CDI........If the Regulator is smoking it is the hidden side that smokes as the cooling fins are on the outside.....
