I've got what I think is a model year 2007 F115. I purchased it on an '09 boat that I bought new in Jan. 2010. The motor had 0.5 hours on it at the time.
It has about 630 now and runs well, but it has historically "made oil". I know this motor likes to run in the upper 4000's and when I can do this, it is fine. But during the offshore season (August - Now), it is hard to run hard in big seas.
Yesterday in the bay, I noticed what looked like a slight oil slick coming off the motor. It was hard to tell if it was from the engine, or dirty water. I fished the bay so I could run it hard. I got about 45 minutes of WOT and it seemed very smooth and sounded normal.
When I got home I pulled off the upper cowling and noticed some oily residue on the left side. The oil level was up slightly and smells of gas. I just changed it 20 hours about for the same reason...
I rinsed the inside with some saltaway and let it dry then hit with Boeshield.
I store the boat on the trailer and trim the motor to a vertical/normal running position. After a few hours, I can see what looks like a little oil coming out of the lower cowling on the left side. I thing flushing the inside with salt away encouraged more drainage...
My question is, what vents to the lower left cowling for drainage? Is it from inside the main compartment? I need to track down this leak, so first I want to know where this might be coming from. Maybe from the top area draining, or would it be lower in the engine.
Thanks,
Steve
