  • OX66 Problem

    Guys, I'm helping a friend trouble shoot a SX225TXRZ

Wide open throttle is 4700+- rpms. I have the same boat, motor and prop and I can get 5400. I ran through pretty much the whole thing, found some issues which we corrected (stuck t-stats, clogged fuel press reg filter which now has fuel pressure back to spec). Compression good on all 6 cylinders (108-110). Ohm'd out the plug caps, all within spec. He has recently replaced the vst, lp pumps. The things runs great up to 4700 but will not go any higher. All of the plugs look pretty good except coil #5 (see pic).
As I said, compression good. This plug probably has been in there 5-10+- hours so obviously this is where the problem is.

Compression good as I said. I tried to check for spark (I know this is one of the cylinders that drops, correct?). Problem is......the pic I'm attaching is the inline spark tester I have, but when I connect it, it's not going into the cap far enough to contact the metal inside the cap. So this tool I have isn't able to confirm spark on any cylinder because it is just not seating properly.

We tried a new coil, still nothing. I'm having a mental block, there HAS to be an easy way or better "tool" to simply test spark! If I can confirm spark, and compression is good, only thing left is fuel, no? FWIW, the fuel pressure reg screen was clogged pretty good. We have not checked injectors or injector screens yet.

    See photos.....

    Hi Tim,

Just throwing it out there, but have you checked TPS?

timing light will show if there is spark on the different plugs by moving pick up to the different plug wires

Tom, no I did not check TPS (though I have the harness).
I'm not sure if an out of whack TPS would have the #5 plug looking as clean as it does. I will do that.

Yam, thanks, maybe a timing light would be a better option.
