Hard starting

I recently aquired a 1984 30hp 2 stroke Yamaha outboard. Using both hands and bracing my foot against the front of the engine I am able to pull the starter rope 5 or 6 time before giving out. Removing the spark plugs enables me to pull the rope with one hand. Does this engine have a compression release that may be malfunctioning or is there other possible problems? Once started engine runs fine.

Sounds like you have a healthy motor with good compression.....
