2003 vmax 150

Tried to start my 2003 150 vmax after a few tries, went to prime and noticed ground wire form motor was smoking (melted) about 12" from battery. What could this be from?

most likely the cable is failing internally.

Do you think it would be ok to just replace the cable?

If it was smoking replace it.
Check, clean, and tighten ALL the cable connections both positive and negative.

I took it in to a dealer by me SWF. It was the wire, replaced it. It was very brittle and hard in some areas.
