  • 86 yamaha 50elj dies when put in gear

I recently purchased this boat. It had been sitting for about 6 yrs. I pulled the plugs and visually looked into cylinders for signs of rust and saw none. Knowing it has sat for so long I lubricated cylinders ans let motor alone for a few days. Came back cleared fuel system, new plugs and away we went. Ran great on first outing but at second outing motor started right up, idled perfect, but when I attempt to put in gear motor dies. Thinking I may have had a ring go bad I did a compression check results are cylinder 1. 115, 2. 100, 3. 100. I can find no specs. with comp. ratio. Results seem to be high for a ring problem. Possibly thinking reed valves. Any suggestions would be great.

Something turned loose in tank, lines, or fuel pump and plugged up the carbs is my thoughts. Running to lean for power in gear

Ran through entire fuel system. I even replaced fuel tank, thinking I had possble settement. Rechecked all carbs and fuel pump. I found nothing out of the ordinary. Rev's good in neutral, but dies as so as put in gear.

So , does that mean you pulled carbs apart and cleaned them properly and followed the steps in service manual for link and sync to make sure all is adjusted properly after reinstalling the cleaned carbs?

Is it possible you lower unit is bad and loading up motor when put in gear?
