2000 model 225 hp lower unit

I have a 2000 model 225 hp 2 stroke That I cant get the lower unit off
I have removed all the bolts 8 total . iDid remove the one under the trim tab.
It overheated on me yesterday and I am afraid I am going to destroy the lower unit getting it apart.
I can get only about 0.015 to 0.020 in the gap between the lower unit and upper housing I am guessing the drive shaft is seized in the powerhead.
Not sure how to continue at this point?
does anyone have any ideas?

If the drive shaft is seized into the crankshaft this is going to be a difficult job. This is why I suggest that a lower unit be removed yearly, if for no other reason to try and prevent a seizure.

Can you run the motor at all is low RPM? You might try loosening all of the bolts about an eighth or a quarter of an inch. Put the boat in the water and drive around a bit at low RPM. Hopefully, the temperature of the crankshaft increasing will expand the crank shaft hole into which the drive shaft sits. The vibration of the motor, the hole getting bigger, and the weight of the lower unit pulling downward may cause the drive shaft to uncouple from the crank shaft.

In most Yams, if the motor is turned hard right or left you can see a portion of the drive shaft as it departs the block and heads for the lower unit. Find where this is. Then, remove all of the bolts holding the lower unit in place. Start the motor and let it run at idle RPM only. Water obviously has to be applied to the motor to keep it cool. Get a rivet type impact gun with a long reach tip and as the drive shaft rotates try and hammer on the drive shaft with the impact gun. It might create enough vibration to break the seizure loose.

Having said all of this, do you know that there are many different models of 225 HP Yamaha motors. You did not say which particular motor you have. Why people don't bother giving us full details is a mystery, but so be it.

Anyway, I looked at a 2000 SX225TXRY and saw that it uses nine, repeat nine, bolts to hold the lower unit in place. You might want to go and check your motor again.
