Turn off outboard 70 hp Yamaha

I can not turn off my Yamaha 70, 70TLRX- 1999. The switch on my Lund, Sport Adventure, will turn on the engine and gas gauge. When I switch it to off the gauge for the fuel will go off, but not the engine. I have to pull the gas line and allow the engine to run until out of gas to stop. Looking for some help-- Thanks

What happens when you activate the kill switch by pulling the lanyard?

When the key is turned off it does two things. It stops 12 volt power from going to the gauges and the motor but the motor will keep on running. It also applies a ground to the charge coil which then causes the engine to have no spark. No sparkee no runee.
