    Need help.
My 225 ox66 saltwater series would continually back down because of low oil alarm. Took to the shop and discovered switched ground wire from pump to CDI was open. We cut wire and when put to ground it would run.Checked continuity all the way to the female plug where it fits into bottom of CDI.
Mechanic says must be a problem with the CDI. I WOULD LIKE A SECOND OPINION BEFORE I LAY OUT $1600. The original problem was intermittent and just got progressively worse until the alarm stayed on constantly. We also replaced the sensor in the tank but no change.

The CDI grounds the pump to cause it to run, if and when oil needs to be added to the main oil tank.

If the wire to the CDI for the pump ground was found to be defective (no continuity) why not just splice in a good section of wire.

Before I would spend $1600 bucks on a new CDI (that might not be defective) I would string wires all over the place, if I had to.

On the other hand, if the blue wire at the CDI terminal has continuity all the way back to the oil pump, then it would appear that the CDI has an internal failure.

Being the cheap bastard that I am, if the CDI has a failure such that it won't ground the oil pump if and when needed, I might consider running a ground wire all the way to the dash. I would then do manually what the CDI is supposed to be doing.

Oh, why was the blue wire cut? It would have been easier just to remove the wire terminal from the CDI connector and check it for continuity back to the oil pump that way.

        Ox66

Thanks, I thought about just installing a toggle switch but my wife said "you cheap bastard fix it right. We had cut the wire when we were checking to see if the problem was in the harness. Wanted to leave all the other connection in place.

do a search on posts by rodbolt on here, look for precision blend, trouble shooting this has been covered a thousand times in great detail, do NOT buy a CDI unit, buy a genuine manual instead.

PBS seems to be the most widely misunderstood system amongst outboard motors.

since 2000 I have seen 3 CDI failures on a V6 Yamaha with the cdi/oil module.
one would not spark the port bank below about 1800 and the other two had bad oil control module sections due to a corroded transfer pump that over currented the ECU.

my guess is a bad splice in the main harness.
could be the brown wire, blue wire or the green/white wire open.
the splice for the green/white typically changes to green/black in the harness to the ECU.
failure of the green white will illuminate the center bar or yellow lamp on the tach.
it will also inhibit automatic transfer.

PBS is so stupidly dirt simple, especially since 1990, however it the most failed section on the Yamaha master tech exam.
its amazing how many techs cant grasp that there are at least 3 things going on at once and what happens when you lose 1.

Thanks I will check those wires

ox66 oil pump still doesnt work

Guys I am getting desperate. As stated previously when blue switched wire that goes to CDI for oil pump run is put to regular ground the pump runs. There is continuity to the wire all the way to the pins on the harness that connect to the CDI. When the harness plug is hooked back up to the CDI it remains open when the oil tank calls for fill. I sucked it up and purchased a new CDI and still have the same problem. Just general info I do not have Yamaha gauges so the only indication is the buzzer before the engine backs down to 2500 rpm. HELP PLEASE

Have you checked the remote tank sensor, the ground wire (black) to the sensor and the ground reference wire (black with red tracer) from the remote tank sensor to the ECU?

If the ECU does not get a ground reference from the remote tank sensor it will think that the remote tank is low on oil. In which case the ECU will not provide a ground to the pump.

re-read posts 5 and 7....., and then search for the previous posts by rodbolt on this issue, it has been covered in great (easy to understand) detail many times, buying parts is NOT the way to fix it, as you have found out.

I don't think you are getting it, the ONLY time the blue wire will show continuity to ground is IF the pump has been commanded ON.
all other times the blue is an open circuit.
however IF the switch in the remote tank is open OR the wire compromised you will get a center bar tach indicate AND no automatic transfer, ever.
