  • Electric fuel pump?

    Hi All,
I have a rather strange question. I have a friend who is a paraplegic and has difficulty priming his motor at the primer bulb as he cannot get to it due to his condition. An ardent boater, he asked if I could install an electric fuel pump such as a Huco or a Facet between the built in tank and the primer bulb so he can prime the motor, prior to a cold start.

I would wire the pump onto a switch so that it only operates to prime the motor with fuel and then he must switch it off so that the original Yamaha pump on the motor then takes over for normal running.
The question is would there be any detrimental effect on the motor by doing this?
His motor is a Yamaha 130BETOL, 2 stroke 1999 model, 205 hours run time.

Any advice would be appreciated. - Thanks.

    two things.
1, the pump must be uscg rated for marine use.
2, it must be wired on a spring loaded momentary on switch.
    after that your ****en.

Maybe you could run an extra long fuel line from the tank to the primer bulb and then to the motor, putting the primer bulb within his reach....I have a daughter in a wheelchair and fairly Familiar with the challenges....good luck!

Thank you Rodbolt and Robert Graham!
I had thought of moving the primer bulb to the front of the boat, but an electric pump would be nicer and easier to use.
I have spring loaded, momentary on, toggle switch (new) that I can use.
        Thanks again guys.
        Kindest Regards,
        Dennis.

You need to make sure that the pump you use can draw through when shut off. Most pumps need to be on to flow. Yamaha actually offered primer pumps years ago. I've still got one on my boat with twins. Works great. The other one was removed when I was chasing a starvation issue. Turned out it was a collapsed fuel line. Never put it back on....

            Electric fuel pump

            Hi there BQUICK,

I managed to find a pump that flows through. Fitted the spring loaded momentary on switch that Rodbolt spoke about and fitted the pump. No leaks!
We primed the motor using the pump. It runs at 3.5 psi and has a cut off when the line is full.
The primer bulb was firm and the Yammy started immediately with the choke on until start. Ran on the lake from *****ing to WOT. Works great!
Jim said to thank you guys for the advice.

            Thanks again to all!
