  • '96 C85 tilt stuck in up position

    Engine is '96 Yam C85.

The tilt motor runs, makes noise as usual. A little high pitched. I went to drop the motor into the water, released the up lock, pushed the button, won't go down. Added fluid, to no avail.

Climbed onto the back of the boat, pushed down on motor. It goes down a little bit, so it isn't stuck at the mount. Just nothing happens. Tilt motor runs both ways, but engine won't move.

Tried the manual release. It is stuck! Boat is kept in water, so there is some marine growth around arrow that indicates screw turn direction. Which way does it turn on the '96?

    It went down~!

    The plot thickens!

I came home today from a business trip where I was gone for a week. When I wandered down to my boat house, I walked onto the boat and out of pure curiosity pushed the down button on the throttle. Guess what?

DOWN it went! It is working normally!

    Hello?

    Any ideas? Thanx in advance...

      tilt

loosening the screw, counterclockwise should release the pressure and lower the engine.

You may want to check the electrical grounds.

If the boats sits in salt water, its probably not a bad idea to lube both pivot shafts should they not have been serviced.

      Good luck
