  • Loose plastic in lower leg F115

I have just changed the oil in the lower leg and what I noticed is a large piece of white plastic blocking the top oil level hole. Using a tooth pick I can push the obstruction upwards and oil weeps out the hole confirming that I have at least got the right amount of oil back in there, when I remove the tooth pick the plastic slides back down blocking the hole. The object could be floating on the oil??????
I can see a curvature on the object so to my guess it would be around 40mm in diameter and I believe it to be a component of the gear box and not a piece rubbish or plug washer or filler nozzle etc.

There was no debris or water in the oil when I changed it and I have since used the motor in this condition.

I talked to my dealership and he said there is nothing plastic in the gearbox.
The gearbox has never been apart before, the only thing that has been done to the leg from new is a water pump.

find a real dealership and quit trying to engineer things.
    its the lubrication sleeve.
most Yamaha lower units have it.

      Hi Rodbolt

      Thanks for the reply.

Can you assist with some more info, my dealership wants to strip the leg down to take a look which would be fine if it was still in warranty.

Lubrication sleeve you say, should it be loose? I cant see it on any of the parts lists.

      Regards
      John

        Hi again Rodbolt

I found a picture of the lubrication sleeve on Ebay, yes I believe that is it.
Can you tell me if it is partially loose when installed or should it be snug. Perhaps it can move just a bit within the location tabs.

I think you may have just saved me some unnecessary costly repairs, thanks for your help.

        Regards
        John

it just kinda drifts around in the housing.

quit hunting non issues on a good running engne.
go enjoy a cool refreshing beverage and play.

          my worry.
your dealership should have giggled, maybe laughed out loud at your question.
then told you about the lube sleeve and sent you on your way.
tells me someone doesn't have much experience with Yamaha gearcases.

not someone would want stripping and reassembling my gearcase.
