  • 2001 Yamaha 115hp 4 stoke not getting up to speed

    I have a ranger bass boat with a 2001 Yamaha 4 stroke 115hp outboard. It is con*****ed by a Yamaha 703 remote. I am having trouble getting up to speed. I push the throttle all the way forward and can barely go 10knots. The engine is only reving to 3k rpms.

    Going to check linkage but any other thoughts or has anyone else experienced this problem? I am out at the lake for a vacay and this is putting a damper on the fishing

    Oh also when in neutral I can lift the fast idle lever and get the rpms up to 5k.

      sounds like we have the same problem, I checked my fuel pressure and it is over fifty psi. I do not know what it is suppose to be.

          hhmmm where to start, first off, buy a genuine manual, measuring fuel pressure is a good thing, but without knowing what it is supposed to be, you might just as well not bothered, revving in neutral is useless, it tests and proves nothing, kind of doubt it will be the spark plugs, but that is where to start (after you buy the manual) remove the plugs and have a look at them, are they all the same?

            Likely two different issues here.

            To the second poster, if you really are getting 50 psi, that sounds high. I think that the pressure regulator is supposed to manage keeping that down (I know for a 2004 it is supposed to be around 44PSI).

            To the first poster, I just went through similar symptoms. Ended up being clogged injectors and filters and water in the fuel. Not sure if the water was the root cause but have gone through my entire system and running great again.

            As suggested, get a service manual. Might help you troubleshoot your issue or at the very least provide you with the specs needed if you are planning on investigating yourself.

            Sill, the basic components to an engine are compression, spark, and fuel. Start with the easy stuff that would be considered maintenance before ripping into any heavy investigating.

            1. check your filters, (water filters, inline fuel filters, etc)
            2. check oil and oil level
            3. Look for any fuel leaks
            4. Look for any obstructions in fuel or vent lines (kink in line, collapsed fuel bulb primer, etc).
            5. Look for damaged / corroded wires.
            6. check spark plugs to see if they are damaged, wet, dry, getting hot, etc

            If you need to dig deeper than this, compression test, leak down test, fuel pressure, spark, etc.
